Tesuji Shibori requires playing with tension and pleats on ones cloth while wrapping it with thread to bind it. To accommodate this need, master Arimatsu Shibori artisans devised a tool, the Tesuji Shibori Stand. A traditional stand is constructed of bamboo and wood, two readily available materials in Japan.
In our Tesuji Shibori Hybrid Workshop, our very own Arimatsu Shibori Artisan and teacher, Murase-san, demonstrates how this stand is utilized while binding cloth for Tesuji Shibori. The Tesuji Shibori stand sold here is one built of materials readily available in Berkeley, CA! Rather than bamboo, PVC pipe is used and also wood.
The stand is clamped onto a table. Then one slips the Shibori cloth on and off the stand to create the appropriate tension when binding the cloth with thread. This stand can also be useful while stitching for various Mokume Shibori.
